A Fortune For Your Disaster: Hanif Abdurraqib Is Out Here Giving Roses

Hanif Abdurraqib was told that as a critic, his writing was too metaphorical and never focused, so he decided to just become a poet instead. Today Hanif merges his affinity for hip-hop with his critically-acclaimed writing style, and in 2019 he published New York Times Bestseller Go Ahead in the Rain: Notes to A Tribe Called Quest. His latest book of poems, A Fortune for Your Disaster, was just released, and is about how one rebuilds oneself after a heartbreak, the kind that renders them a different version of themselves than the one they knew. Listen as Hanif describes how he developed his dynamic writing style, wrestling with telling an honest self-narrative, and how gratitude inspires his craft.
