Postponed: “Venus Vs.” Screening
03/15, 4:00pm - 6:00pm
Please note: All One Woman, One Vote Film Festival events have been postponed, including this screening. We’re looking forward to sharing the new date with you soon.
One Woman, One Vote. That’s the heart of the 19th Amendment, which turns 100 years old in 2020 – and that’s also the name of the DC film festival celebrating documentary and dramatic films “that embrace both history and contemporary issues that make a difference for all women today.”
In collaboration with the festival, which is showcasing the work of director Ava DuVernay all month long, the LINE Hotel DC presents a screening of Venus Vs., a documentary directed by DuVernay for ESPN. Join us on Sunday, March 15th for the film, and a panel discussion of local writers and community leaders discussing pay disparity across age and race.
Venus Vs. highlights Venus Williams’ work that changed the course of women’s tennis. In a stunning case that drew increasing attention and debate, Williams challenged the long-held practice of paying women tennis players less money than their male counterparts at Wimbledon. With a deep sense of obligation to the legacy of Billie Jean King, Williams lobbied British Parliament, UNESCO and Fleet Street for financial parity. The boys clubs at Roland Garros and Wimbledon finally relented in 2007 and during that same year Venus became the first women’s champion at Wimbledon to earn as much as the men’s champion, Roger Federer.
This event is free and open to all.
