Sparked by her own student debt story, Chelsea Hernandez has started a podcast to break the stigma of student debt, personally opening up about her own while inviting guests to share their stories to showcase students are not alone in this $1.4 trillion debt dilemma. The podcast will be recorded in front of a live audience every Saturday at 1pm at The Line Hotel in Austin. This recording is part of The Line Residency, an artist in residence program with Big Medium Gallery and The Line Hotel.

Chelsea brings in Samantha Rae Lopez to co-host the first episode, “Working to Debt.” Samantha is a first-generation college graduate with a Bachelors of Science degree in film production from Full Sail University. In the 11 years since her graduation, she has worked within various industries including film, nonprofit, tech and digital media marketing. Today, she works for an Austin based vacation rental tech company and spends her free time doing stand up comedy and working on a film review podcast called “Critics on Tap”.

First episode guests include Illyana Bocanegra and Denise Thornton. Illyana is a creative producer living in Austin, Texas and found herself calling friends over to her house to talk about money over spaghetti in order to break out of isolation about money management issues. Denise Thornton is a professional learning facilitator at the University of Texas Charles A. Dana Center where she provides professional learning opportunities and resources for teachers and leaders to catalyze school and district improvements that increase student success in mathematics and advance college- and career-readiness goals. With 19 years of experience in public education Denise was given an opportunity to have her loans forgiven to which she will share how it occurred.
